According to a recent survey from the American Massage Therapy Association many older adults are getting massage therapy to address their medical concerns. Among those surveyed 9 million people older than 55 received 39 million massages over a span of 12 months.
Not just aches and pains
These massage clients are often dealing with serious medical conditions and often finding relief and improvement of symptoms. Massage has been effective in treating chronic pain, and also can improve stability and posture. This is important as we age and are at greater risk of injury from falls. Research has also shown the benefits of massage therapy among those experiencing dementia, as well as reducing pain and improving quality of life for hospice patients.
