essential oils

In recent years, more and more people have begun to recognize the benefits of essential oils. The practice of using fragrant plant oils and other aromatic compounds has been shown to be very effective in altering and improving one’s mood, physical and psychological well-being. In fact, those who are educated in the field are adept at matching certain oils to specific needs. From arthritis to insomnia or sinusitis, there is an oil or blend for just about any purpose.

It’s no secret that when used in combination with massage, the right essential oils and oil blends greatly enhance the experience. In addition to the healing and invigorating effects of aromatherapy, they also improve the overall hands-on techniques employed by masseuses and massage therapists. However, did you know that post massage, the benefits of aromatherapy can linger for up to 24 hours? According to the publication Massage Today, “this long lasting quality of essential oils is also a great benefit when working with clients who have chronic or acute inflammation and pain.”

Along with the healing power of touch, time on the massage table is enriched through the incorporation of rich aromas of the essential oils. Lavender is frequently mentioned for its stress reducing properties, along with Roman chamomile, geranium, sweet marjoram, patchouli, rose, and ylang ylang.

Skilled massage therapists who are adept at matching oils and oil blends to clients’ needs may suggest that they also be used at home. For example, some oils are used in infusers, in the bath, inhaled or applied to certain parts of the body, such as the nape of the neck, wrists or soles of the feet. Since the use of certain essential oils and oil blends may be impacted by exposure to certain elements and substances, such as sunlight or alcohol, it is advised that written instructions always accompany the products intended for home use.
