yoga instructor in class

Becoming a Certified Yoga Instructor can be incredibly rewarding, whether you want to deepen your own practice and/or teach yoga to others. The journey begins with a professional and challenging training program that helps you develop your own daily practice, build your yoga community, and inspire your personal growth.

The Right Foundation

The path to becoming a certified yoga instructor generally begins with a 200-hour yoga teacher training program. The training facility you choose, and the pace of the curriculum will determine the length of time it takes to attain 200 hours.
In the 200 hours, you’ll get intensive training in all aspects of yoga including asana (postures), pranayama (breath work), yoga history, philosophy, and ethics; yoga of sound, meditation, mindfulness, chakras, ayurveda, principles of alignment, vast anatomy knowledge, and the business side of yoga.

The Right Space

To ensure you are getting the highest level of yoga teacher training, choose a school that is a Registered Yoga School (RYS) with Yoga Alliance. When you attend a credible institution, you are attending a school that has undergone a rigorous process that evaluates educational quality. That means you can have confidence that the instructors are qualified, and the program of study is approved.

Additionally, the facility you choose for training to become a certified yoga instructor should be enriching, and inspire peace, wellness, and a powerful mind-body connection.

The Right Instructors

You’ll want to do some preliminary investigation into the primary instructor or instructors to find out what styles of yoga they teach, where they studied, and how long they have been teaching – although, it’s important to remember that a teacher trainer doesn’t have to have years of experience to be a great teacher.

The yoga teacher trainer you work with should have practical knowledge of the human body, its movements, and the nuances of yoga postures. Above all, you want your instructor(s) to create a safe and supportive environment and treat yoga as a lifestyle program, encouraging you to integrate your practice on the mat with your daily life.
