personal training

Passionate about fitness and healthy living? Prefer an active job versus sitting at a desk? Love to help people? A career in personal training might just be an ideal fit for you.

But how do you get a job as a personal trainer?

Get Educated

Your first step, once you feel committed to the idea of entering the personal training profession, is to become educated. You’ve probably heard of personal training certifications, and while it’s important to earn a certification, there is a huge difference between being certified and having the knowledge necessary to be an effective, safe, and qualified personal trainer.

In the Personal Fitness Training academic program at LHAA students learn much more than just what’s needed to pass a certification exam. They also gain skills and knowledge in the following areas:

  • Assessing a client’s level of fitness
  • Designing an exercise program
  • Effective communication
  • Lifestyle wellness coaching
  • Sciences such as Anatomy & Physiology, Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology, and Nutrition
  • The business of personal training

Job Options

Once you’ve graduated from a personal training program and earned your certification it’s time to begin the job search. Some personal trainers work for gyms, health clubs, and fitness centers. Others are self-employed, working with clients either in their own facility, in a gym (often paying rent to the gym in order to use their space and equipment), or even in the clients’ homes. If you would like to work in a gym or fitness center don’t restrict your job search to just those businesses that are open to the general public. The following types of organizations often have fitness facilities onsite and may be in need of a professional personal trainer to add to their staff:

  • Larger corporations
  • Hospitals and healthcare facilities
  • Colleges and Universities
  • Professional sports teams
  • Elder care facilities and nursing homes
  • Country clubs and golf clubs
